SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- The Norwich Men's Ice Hockey team rounded out their regular season Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over Skidmore, earning a split on the weekend and clinching the second seed in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Tournament.
Early on, the Thoroughbreds carried over the momentum from yesterday's game, owning the territorial advantage and putting
Sami Molu (Toronto, On.) to the test. After Molu held the fort, a late man advantage flipped the script, and it was Josh Seeley's turn make a statement. Seeley held his ground leading to a scoreless tie after the opening frame.
The momentum from the end of the first carried over into the second, as Norwich continued to push the play. Halfway through the period, while shorthanded, the Cadets finally broke through. The Norwich penalty kill was not allowing the Thoroughbreds to gain entry. On one of their final entry attempts,
Ben van Waterschoot (Whitby, On.) poked the puck lose before it was collected by
Owen Sclisizzi (Milton, On.). Sclisizzi sprung van Waterschoot on a break, who cut to the middle in front of Seeley and scored, putting the Cadets ahead.
Late in the period, Norwich extended their lead off a spectacular individual effort by
Nick Cordeiro (Mississauga, On.). He caused a turnover by the Skidmore defenseman at the left point and sprung ahead for a breakaway, and picking Seeley high to the glove side giving the Cadets a two-goal lead after forty minutes.
Norwich kept the momentum going to open the third and would add to their lead.
Colin Elliot (Peterborough, On.) caused the turnover got the puck to
Zach Ophoven (Burlington, On.) who rushed ahead. Ophoven found
Matt Harvey (Fort Covington, N.Y.) who beat Seeley, putting the Cadets ahead by three. Facing a tough hill to climb, Skidmore answered with Ethan Heidepriem stuffing home a rebound. With just under five minutes left, with Seeley on the bench for the extra attacker, Zach Lindewirth brought it to a one goal game. Skidmore continued to press for the equalizer with the extra attacker, but Molu shut the door. With two seconds left,
Holden Doggett (Oakville, On.) sunk the empty netter to seal the game.
After earning the two seed in the NEHC Tournament, the Cadets will host seventh seeded Elmira at 7 PM on March 1 in the latter end of a postseason twin bill.
