Women's Ice Hockey: Cadets Pace Pilgrims with Two Goals in 22 Seconds to Open Senior Day

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team closed out their regular season Saturday afternoon by dominating New England College 5-0 on senior day behind three-point efforts from Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) and Jenna Nikles (Riley, Mich.).

After senior Taylor Girouard (Burlington, Mass.) and Olivia King (Old Town, Maine) were honored before the game, the puck hit the ice for the regular season finale which the Cadets dominated from the jump. With Norwich pressing, the top line would strike twice in just 22 seconds. Nikles's forecheck created a Pilgrim turnover, which she gathered and sent it to Ricker, whose initial shot was stopped by Kayden Lallier-Whissell. After a whack by Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio), Nikels would poke it home for the ice breaker. After NEC won the ensuing faceoff, Tristina Doyle (Cape Coral, Fla.) created a turnover in the Pilgrims' attacking end and sprung Nikles on a two-on-one with Ricker. Nikles found Ricker with a centering pass in front to make it a two-goal game.

Norwich kept their foot on the gas in the middle frame and added to their lead five minutes in. Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill) took a Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) pass in the neutral zone before springing Marja Linzbichler (Graz, Austria) on a breakaway right through the middle, which she converted on stretching the lead to three. The pressure kept going, but it remained a three-goal game after two periods.

Just under two and a half minutes into the final stanza, it became a four-goal lead. Tuzik kept the play alive at the right point before sending it cross ice to Nikles who found Ricker wide open in the slot before scoring five-hole on Lallier-Whissell. A minute and a half later, Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.) created a turnover before setting up Julia Richardson (Commerce, Mich.) for the fifth and final goal of the afternoon. The win gave Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) her seventh shutout of the season, and 26th of her career, tying her for the most career shutouts in program history with Laurie King '18.

With the regular season concluding, the top seeded Cadets will host eighth seeded Albertus Magnus Sat. Feb. 22 at 3 PM in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Quarterfinals.
