NEW BEDFORD, Mass.- The Norwich Men's Ice Hockey team continued its road trip through Little East Conference (LEC) play with a visit to UMass Dartmouth Friday evening in their first contest against the Corsairs since Jan. 4, 2008, where the offense from
Ocean Fancy (Orleans, Mass.) drove the maroon and gold to victory.
On the back of an opening minute man advantage, the Cadets dominated offensive zone time, forcing UMass Dartmouth netminder Graham Burke to come up with several saves.
Bryce Walcarius (Aylmer, Ont.) answered later in the frame with stops of his own. Burke singlehandedly kept the game scoreless at first intermission despite a 13-4 Norwich shot advantage.
Burke continued to keep the game close early in the second, before the Corsairs went to their first power play of the contest, where they cashed in with Ryan Patrick putting home a cross-ice feed from Tyler Stewart. The two sides traded man advantages, while Norwich continued to hold the territorial edge at even strength.
In the last five minutes of the period, Norwich went to another power play where Fancy evened the score.
Colin Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) took possession behind the net and fed
Boyd Stahlbaum (Peterborough, Ont.) at the right point, who sent it along the blue line to Fancy, whose wrist shot through traffic beat Burke to tie the game.
As the period wound down, both sides continued the parade to the sin bin, with Fancy cashing in with his second just before the final minute.
Cooper Bertrand (Caledon, Ont.) came down from the right point to draw the penalty killers before sending it back to Stahlbaum, who connected with Fancy again to give Norwich the lead after two periods while holding a 27-7 advantage in the shot department.
Out of the break, the Corsairs pressed for the tie, but Walcarius stood tall. After some back-and-forth action, the Cadets returned to the man advantage, which UMass Dartmouth killed off with numerous blocked shots. The penalty box parade continued, but both penalty kills held firm.
In the final minutes, the Corsairs were awarded a five-minute power play, which evolved into a five-on-three with the goalie pulled. Several saves by Walcarius and a big block by
Matt Harvey (Fort Covington, N.Y.) preserved the win for Norwich, as Walcarius totaled ten saves in the final frame.
"Thought we battled hard tonight," Head Coach Dominick Dawes '04 said. "We need to be more disciplined and understand how to manage moments in the game. But it was great to see the power play step up when we needed it."
The Cadets' road trip concludes Saturday night with their final LEC contest of the first semester when they travel to UMass Boston for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop.
