NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's swimming & diving team prevailed in a back-and-forth dual meet on Saturday afternoon, edging Husson University, 151-140, in an exciting home victory at Goodyear Pool to remain unbeaten in dual competition.
The Cadets captured nine event wins across the 16-event slate, highlighted by multi-win efforts from
Delaney Allen (Gibsonia, Pa.) and
Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.).Â
Vivian Buntin (Middlebury, Conn.) added another strong showing in the breaststroke, while
Burgan Danger (Wadsworth, Ohio) and
Deanna Parot (San Diego, Calif.) provided key points throughout the afternoon to help Norwich hold off the Eagles in the meet's closing stretch.
Norwich set the tone in the opening relay, as Danger, Buntin,
Katelyn Daly (Pensacola, Fla.), and Allen combined for a 4:33.19 finish in the 400-yard medley relay to take first by more than three seconds. The win helped propel Norwich into an early lead that it would narrowly maintain through much of the competition.
Allen went on to sweep her individual events, taking first in the 200 freestyle (2:05.84), 50 breaststroke (34.59), and 50 freestyle (26.62). Buntin followed with a dominant performance in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:53.46 to extend Norwich's lead midway through the meet.
On the boards, Laitala once again proved untouchable, sweeping both 1-meter events. She tallied a 208.65 in the six optional dives before adding a 149.80 in the voluntary round, outscoring her nearest competitor by more than 10 points in each event.
Parot contributed valuable finishes throughout the meet, including a win in the 50 butterfly (30.34) and a runner-up performance in the 100 freestyle (1:00.27). Danger added key points in the backstroke and individual medley events, finishing second in both the 50 back (30.85), 200 back (2:27.44), and 100 IM (1:13.01).
"What an incredible competition," said Head Coach
Jennifer Cournoyer. "Husson came prepared, and it's a testament to our women who fought hard and were willing to fill holes in our lineups. It's an amazing feeling to be on deck with a team that is fighting for each other."
The victory capped a sweep for Norwich inside Goodyear Pool, as the men's team also earned a 174-106 win over Husson in their dual meet in the afternoon.
