NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's swimming & diving team put together a commanding all-around performance in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 147-86 victory over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Regis College at Goodyear Pool.
The Cadets earned nine victories across the 13-event slate, riding standout efforts from
Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.) and
Brandy Lewis (Strafford, Vt.), who each notched two individual wins on the afternoon.Â
Delaney Allen (Gibsonia, Pa.),
Maria Piekarczyk (Dudley, Mass.),
Burgan Danger (Wadsworth, Ohio), and
Vivian Buntin (Middlebury, Conn.) also contributed key first-place finishes, as Norwich controlled the pace in both the lanes and on the boards.
The meet opened with a strong statement in the 200-yard medley relay, as Danger, Allen, Piekarczyk, and
Deanna Parot (San Diego, Calif.) posted a 2:02.15 finish to win the event by nearly eight seconds. Lewis followed with a thrilling win in the 1000 freestyle, cruising to a time of 12:19.53 and finishing more than 12 seconds clear of the field.
Norwich continued to build momentum through the middle of the meet, with victories in the 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back, and 500 free. Allen's 26.30 sprint in the 50 free and Piekarczyk's 1:09.44 effort in the 100 fly helped keep the Cadets out front. Danger's backstroke win (1:05.28) and Lewis's 5:59.02 effort in the 500 free added to their strong afternoon.
On the diving boards, Laitala swept both the 1-meter events, tallying a 225.15 in the six optional dive round and a 171.30 in the five voluntary dive round, with both victories by 20-plus point margins.
Buntin capped off the afternoon with a dominant showing in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:18.62 to secure another event win and hold off Regis's Sophia Nylin by nearly eight seconds.
"What an exciting meet to have for our home opening meet," said Head Coach
Jennifer Cournoyer. "Regis has some strong competitors who really pushed us, but it was outstanding to see former swimmer
Kaylin Creel excelling as an assistant coach. We had three of our women divers perform all 11 dives successfully, and this early in the season is outsanding."
The women's victory helped complete a Saturday sweep over Regis in Goodyear Pool, as the Norwich men's team also secured a dominant win in the day's opening dual.
