BRONX, N.Y. — The Norwich Football team returned from its bye week Saturday afternoon when it visited SUNY Maritime to continue New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
Maritime struck early and kept the pressure on throughout. The Privateers opened the scoring when Joshua Rogers capped an 11-play, 80-yard opening drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. A short time later, Mark Russo added a 5-yard rushing score, and Maritime led 14-0 after one quarter.
The Privateers continued to roll in the second, with Rogers punching in a 2-yard touchdown to open the second quarter. The Cadets looked to cut into the deficit after
Landon Beecher (Holliston, Mass.) connected with
Ben Weers (Hebron, Conn.) on a 37-yard catch and run, putting Norwich in the red zone before Maritime generated a turnover. The
Privateers found the end zone one more time, going up four scores at halftime. Maritime punched it in twice more in the second half.
Offensively,
Mike Cascarano (Lake Worth, Fla.) led the way, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, while
Anderson Guerrero (Boston, Mass.) hauled in six receptions. Defensively,
Ben Primich (Yardley, Pa.) tallied 15 total tackles, including 2.5 for a loss of three yards.
Norwich will continue NEWMAC play when it battles archrival Coast Guard in the Little Army-Navy Game on Oct. 25. The Battle for 'The Mug' will kickoff at 12:00 p.m.
