NORTHFIELD, Vt.- After a lengthy, penalty filled affair in the consolation game, the Norwich Men's Ice Hockey team took the Kreitzberg Arena ice to take on twelfth ranked Hamilton in the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament Championship game Saturday night in the first meeting between two programs since the 2017 NCAA Quarterfinals.
Less than a minute into the contest, the Cadets would go shorthanded, and the Continentals would make them pay with Jackson Krock tipping home a pass by Devon de Vries on their second shot on goal of the game to give Hamilton the lead two minutes in. As the frame progressed, Norwich would put Continental goaltender Charlie Archer to the test, but the lead stood for Hamilton at the break, as Archer and
Sami Molu (Toronto, On.) traded saves.
The Continentals continued to control the play early in the second stanza and would extend their lead. Defenseman Nick Kent would block a Norwich clearing attempt before centering it to Carson Hall for a one timer to give Hamilton the two-goal lead 3:19 into the frame. Molu kept the Cadets in the game making numerous stops, but the Continentals would eventually push their advantage to three with Kent sending a wrist shot through traffic off a faceoff win.
Late in the period, the Cadets would finally break through on the offensive side, minutes after an apparent fourth Hamilton goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference. Archer had difficulty corralling a
Harris Hilfiker (Middletown, N.J.) Â shot from the point.
Collin Elliott (Peterborough, On.) got his stick on it before
Anthony Domina (Odenton, Md.) pushed it home for his first collegiate goal making it a two-goal game at intermission.
The Continentals prevented the Cadets from establishing any kind of possession in their offensive end in the third. Just passed the halfway point, Ryan Sordillo would reclaim Hamilton's three goal lead where the score would remain. Earning All-Tournament team honors for Norwich were Domina, and
Ben van Waterschoot (Whitby, On.) both of whom tallied goals with van Waterschoot also scoring the shootout winner against Williams.
The Cadets will remain on home ice where they will entertain New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) foe UMass Boston for a weekend series that will commence Friday Jan. 10 at 7 PM.
