Women's Basketball: Cadet offense stifled in conference loss to Blue Jays

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Norwich University women's basketball team could not overcome the University of Saint Joseph's offensive firepower, falling 68-29 to the Blue Jays in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash at the James A. Calhoun Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the lone Cadet to cross into double-digit territory, tallying 11 points in the loss.

The Cadet offense appeared prime to roll early after Saint Joseph's Jordan Ouellette struck first on a layup, as Jessica Zimmerman (Turner, Maine) responded on a trey off a Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) helper.  Despite three-straight baskets by the Blue Jays, Norwich continued to remain close, slicing the Saint Joseph lead in half, 10-5, on a Brewster jumper.

The Blue Jays proceeded to widen the gap, extending their advantage to double-digits and taking a 14-point lead into the first break.  The second quarter proved to be much the same, as the Blue Jays nearly doubled their lead into a 41-14 edge.

The University of Saint Joseph's defense was the star of the third stanza, limiting the Norwich defense to just two points as Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) ended the scoreless frame six minutes in.

Norwich found some momentum in the fourth, outscoring the Blue Jays, 13-10.  Brewster initiated a 6-0 spurt out of the gates that was capped off by a Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.) jumper to whittle the lead down to 36.  It was the closest the visitors would get, however, as Saint Joseph soared to the 39-point victory.

The Cadets, still on the hunt for their first GNAC victory of the season, will travel to rival Rivier University on Wednesday, Jan. 15, for a 5:00 p.m. bout.  Norwich then returns home to close the week for a Saturday, Jan. 18 showdown with Emmanuel College.
