Men's Lacrosse: Norwich's winning streak evaporated by Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team saw their quest for an undefeated Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season halted at Lasell University on Tuesday afternoon, as the Cadets fell to to the Lasers, 10-5, in a cross-divisional contest at Grellier Field.

Three different Cadets combined for the five goals, with Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.) spearheading the effort with a hat trick.  Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) and Mason McMahon (Norwich, Conn.) each supplied a goal, with Rainis dishing out an assist on Seidel's tally.

Lasell's defense held Norwich scoreless for the opening frame while amassing a pair of scores before adding a third just seconds into the second period.  The Lasers' momentum would be quelled, however, as Rainis ripped in back-to-back scores in a 42-second span to bring the Cadets to within one.

Four-straight goals from Lasell, however, supplied the hosts with newfound offensive rhythm, and another score from Rainis was swiftly neutralized by an eighth Lasell goal.  McMahon sliced the Laser lead in half in the only third-period goal from either team, but a pair of man-up goals to ignite the fourth stanza pushed Lasell even further ahead.

The Rainis-Seidel connection with three minutes remaining cut the lead in half yet again, but time ran short on the Cadets' potential comeback bid.

The Cadets finished a near-perfect 14-16 on clear attempts, while forcing seven Lasell turnovers, spurred by McMahon's two.  Clayton Cisar (Aberdeen, Md.) and Matthew Hannon (Milford, N.H.) led Norwich in ground balls with three apiece.

Norwich returns home for a noon conference clash with JWU (Providence) on Saturday, Apr. 13, before ending the regular season with three-straight North Divisional battles, traveling to New England College and Rivier University and closing the regular season on Apr. 24 at home against Regis College.
