NORTHBORO, Mass.- In their final road game of the regular season, the Norwich baseball team took on Anna Maria in single game Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
The game started out as a pitcher's duel, as starters Carlos Santos and
Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) kept the opposing lineups in check. The AMCATs would scratch across a run in the third, but Talbot kept them in check otherwise allowing two runs in six innings of work where he walked two and struck out five en route to his first win of the season.
In the sixth, the Cadet offense would awaken. A leadoff single by
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) was quickly followed by
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) being plunked. With two on and nobody out,
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) would bring home Ohlsen with an RBI double to tie the game. Two batters later,
Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) would single and go to second on an error which brought home O'Connor and Franus to give Norwich their first lead of the afternoon.
Anna Maria would cut the lead to one in the home half of the sixth, but Norwich answered in the seventh. With two outs, Ohlsen would reach on an error and would get to third on an O'Connor single. Franus would bring both runners home with a two out, two RBI double to give the Cadets some breathing room.
Norwich would keep the offensive momentum going in the eighth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for
Dillan Garza (San Antonio, Texas) after the AMCATs made a pitching change, and he would be hit by a pitch bringing home Maldonado. After another Anna Maria pitching change, Ohlsen would draw a free pass bringing home
Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.). O'Connor brought home Garza and
Jon Ringer (Cupertino, Calif.) in the next at bat with a single before back-to-back hit by pitches taken by Franus and
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) scored another run before an RBI groundout by Maldonado capped off a six-run frame.
The AMCATs pushed across one more run to make the final margin 11-3. The top of the order carried the Norwich lineup with multi hit days for Ohlsen (3 for 5, 3 Runs Scored), O'Connor (2 for 5, 2 RBI, 3 Runs Scored), and Franus (2 for 5, 3 RBI) while Maldonado (2 for 4, RBI, Run Scored), and Callahan (2 for 5, Run Scored, Stolen Base) also starred. On the mound,
Noah Carpenter (Herkimer, N.Y.) and
Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.) combined to allow one hit in three innings of work out of the bullpen while striking out four.
The Cadets will round out their regular season schedule Sunday afternoon when they host Saint Joseph's College of Maine for the final doubleheader of the season starting at 12 PM.
