NASHUA, N.H.- After their originally scheduled doubleheader had to be rescheduled due to field conditions, the Norwich baseball team took the short trip to Holman Stadium to take on Rivier in a midweek matinee.
The Cadets jumped out to a lead immediately in game one, pushing across two runs with two down in the top of the first. After a walk to
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) loaded the bases, a second consecutive free pass was issued to
Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) bringing home
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) to open the scoring. The following at bat,
Jon Ringer (Cupertino, Calif.) reached on an infield single plating
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.).
After a shut down inning in the bottom of the first for
Carson Rath (Glens Falls, N.Y.) where he retired the side in order, Norwich added to their advantage in the second with three more two out runs. After
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.) reached on a fielder's choice, and the inning being kept alive after a Raiders' throwing error, Carpenter would drive O'Connor home from third with a single to centerfield. After a double steal for Franus and Carpenter, Hayes would drive both runners home with a single down the line to give the Cadets a 5-0 lead.
Rivier would claw back, shrinking the Norwich lead to one by the end of the third, but Rath kept the Raiders at bay with six strikeouts in five innings of work. The score remained the same until the Cadets added some breathing room in the seventh with four more two out runs, starting with a double by
Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) into the right centerfield gap. After swiping third, Callahan would come home on a dropped third strike. A walk to
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) led to a Raider pitching change before back-to-back RBI knocks by O'Connor and Franus before back-to-back batters got plunked stretching the lead to 9-4.
Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) locked things down with no earned runs in the final four innings with three strikeouts earning the save. At the plate, Carpenter went three for four with two runs scored, while Hayes had 3 RBI.
The theme of scoring runs with two outs continued early in game two. The Cadets opened the scoring in the top of the second with
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) driving Carpenter home with an RBI single to left center.
In the third, Norwich added to their lead by putting pressure on the Raider defense via baserunning. A single by Franus put runners on the corners with one out, when Franus would steal second, and the throw down wound up in center field scoring O'Connor from third. Later in the at bat, Franus would also swipe third before coming home on an RBI groundout by Carpenter.
However, the Raiders would answer and tie the contest by the end of the fifth inning before a six-run sixth gave them the lead for good en route to an 11-3 victory.
On deck, the Cadets are currently scheduled to return to Garrity Field for their home opener with a twin bill against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Apr.6 at 1 PM.
