The Norwich men's rugby team hosted the tenth annual Chris Munn's 7's memorial tournament Sunday afternoon on Sabine Field.
Norwich Gold defeated Dartmouth's second team 15–7 and University of New Hampshire 7–5 in tight matches, winning their pool. Freshmen
John Kelley and Chris Wayton scored all the tries, with freshman
Joe Whiteside adding a conversion in the Victory over the Wildcats. Their day came to an end when Norwich Gold and Maroon collided in the semifinals, in which Norwich Maroon won and advanced to the finals to battle Vermont in a rematch from last weekend's Scott Miley's memorial at UNH.
Norwich Maroon started their day off with a 26-0 shutout victory over Middlebury, with scores from senior
Logan Perry, senior
Michel St. Juste, and freshman
Kyle Krebs. Perry tallied four more points from two successful conversions as well as another two from senior
Ben Steen.
Next, The Cadets maroon faced the UVM Catamounts in their second match in pool play with Vermont prevailing in a two-point affair.
Kyle Krebs accounted for all ten points with two tries in the low scoring, nailbiter of a match.
The maroon squad got an opportunity of redemption in the final match of the afternoon against the Catamounts. It was a slow start for the Cadets in the first half, in which UVM was able to capitalize and take a 19-5 advantage into halftime. Norwich rallied in the second half, making a comeback but came up short at the end of regulation with a final score of 24-17. Seniors
Logan Perry,
Michel St. Juste, and
Jered Robertson each scored a try in this Vermont championship bout finishing the tournament as the runner up. Â
Up next, Norwich will look to continue their dominance over the New England Wide Collegiate Rugby Conference (NEWCRC) as they seek their eighth straight NEWCRC 7s Championship down at Springfield College, and a berth in the national tournament. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
