Baseball: Cadets Fall to Comets in Extra Innings

VERO BEACH, Fla.- The Norwich baseball team reached the halfway point of their season opening trip to Florida Tuesday night when they took on Capital.

The first four and a half innings of the contest went scoreless as Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) and Noah Bromberg went toe-to-toe in a pitcher's duel, only allowing three combined hits in the first five innings. The Comets would break through in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cadets responded by tying the game in the following half inning. Bromberg was relieved of the pitching duties in the top of the sixth, the first batter was Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) who got on with a base hit, and would get to second on a balk. Ohlsen would eventually work his way around the bases on two wild pitches to tie the game.

Norwich's next time at bat, they would jump ahead. Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) started things off by eating a hit by pitch and would take second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.), drilled a single up the middle to plate Carpenter.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Capital got runners into scoring position, but Timber Russell (Randolph, Vt.) was able to keep the Comets at bay as they stranded runners on second and third. However, the Comets kept plugging away and would tie the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.

The Cadets got runners into scoring position in the top of the ninth, but the game remained tied heading into extra innings where Capital would win the game on a walk off sacrifice fly. Up next, Norwich will take on Elizabethtown in doubleheader action on March 11 with first pitch scheduled for 11 AM.
