NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team took to home ice Saturday afternoon in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Semifinal against Southern Maine in a rematch of last year's second round affair.
Early in the contest, it was the Huskies who jumped ahead a minute and a half in. After USM recovered the puck behind the Norwich net, it was centered in front to Saige MacLeod who broke the ice on the first shot of the game for the Huskies. Southern Maine had the Cadets on their heels shortly after, but
Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) helped keep the deficit at one.
Eventually, Norwich got going in the offensive zone, and would put Haley McKim to the test, eventually tying the game.
Lauren Tuzik (Frankfort, Ill.) received a pass along the blueline from defensive partner
Wilda Ohman (Lulea, Sweden), and sent a shot that was kicked aside by McKim, but the rebound came directly out to
Melianne Reynolds (Sherbrooke, Que.) who put home the rebound tying the game halfway through the period. Both sides would exchange unsuccessful powerplays before the tied period concluded with the Cadets holding a 10-4 shot advantage.
Norwich kept pressing the attack, looking to break the deadlock in the second period, but McKim came up with numerous big saves to keep it close. USM would counter those with several rushes the other way that were stifled by the Cadet defense. One of those rushes by the Huskies late in the period led to another powerplay, which was killed off and would lead to the score remaining even at the second intermission with the Cadets outshooting the Huskies 14-3 in the period, and 24-6 overall.
Chances for both teams were few and far between in the third period, as neither side was willing to budge, eventually sending the game to overtime. Early in the period, the Cadets had the early press, and nearly ended things but the shot hit the post. Eventually, an offensive zone faceoff win by the Huskies developed into a net mouth scramble, with Madison Chagnon burying the rebound for the game winning goal.
Norwich's season concludes after amassing 19 wins, 10 of which came in NEHC play.
