NORTHFIELD, Vt.- In their final home game of the calendar year, the Norwich Men's Ice Hockey team would complete their weekend sweep of Albertus Magnus Saturday afternoon.
Looking to avoid the sweep, the Falcons held the edge early, but a penalty three minutes in would stymie that momentum and allowed the Cadets to counter. In what would become a penalty filled affair, Albertus would go to the box one more time before getting a man advantage of their own in the waning minutes which carried over into the second period. Despite the game being scoreless at intermission, Norwich held the territorial advantage and led in shots 10-6.
The two sides continued the parade to the penalty box during the start of the second period. Once those were killed off and the game returned to even strength, the Cadets would finally break through.
Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.) would rifle a wrist shot by Albertus goaltender Matt Lenz directly off a
Johnny Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) faceoff win to give Norwich the lead. Minutes later, the Falcons went back to the powerplay and would tie the game courtesy of Paden Hicks.
Five minutes later, Albertus would once again make their way to the sin bin and the Cadets would make them pay. After the initial shot by
Matt Harvey (Fort Covington, N.Y.) was turned aside by Lenz,
Ben van Waterschoot (Whitby, On.) poked the rebound free to
Nick Foster (Amherst, Mass.) who would hit the post before
Nick Cordeiro (Mississauga, On.) made a move and scored the eventual game winner in the final minute of the second period.
Norwich kept their foot on the gas in the third period as they looked to seal the deal. Just before the halfway point,
Holden Doggett (Oakville, On.) picked the pocket of a Falcon defender in the Albertus defensive zone before setting up
Colin Elliott (Peterborough, On.) for the Cadets' third goal of the game.
Late in the game, Albertus took a timeout before summoning Lenz to the bench for the extra skater. While attempting to make the late push, the Falcons were assessed a five-minute major, putting them shorthanded for the rest of the game. After Kerner recovered the puck in the defensive zone, an odd-man rush resulted. Kerner centered the puck to Johnson for the fourth and final goal of the contest. After a myriad of fouls were accrued by both sides in the final minutes, the final horn sounded with Norwich's 4-1 lead standing.
As they continue New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play, the Cadets will travel down Interstate 89 Friday night to take on former travel partner New England College at 7 PM.
