Women's Ice Hockey: Cadets Fall to Bantams in Overtime

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla.- In their second game of the Sunshine Turkey Classic, the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team took the ice Saturday afternoon to face twelfth ranked Trinity.

After an early back-and-forth, the Cadets would go on the first two powerplays of the game. While unsuccessful, they helped generate momentum in Norwich's favor as they held the territorial advantage throughout the frame. Bantam goalie Madeline Carter played a big role in keeping the game scoreless after the first despite a 10-3 shot advantage for the gold clad Cadets.

The second period was much of the same story to start, as the Cadets had two more opportunities on the man advantage that were unsuccessful. They were able to keep their foot on the gas, and eventually break through on the scoreboard. Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) caused a Trinity turnover and broke out on a two-on-one. She fed Rylie McIntyre (Brunswick, Maine) on a centering pass to put Norwich ahead by the end of the second.

Sensing the urgency, the Bantams upped the pressure in the third and tie the game just before the halfway point. A faceoff win by Martina Exnerova came to Paige Kehoe who fed it to Marta Mazzocchi at the net mouth for the game tying tally. Trinity kept the pressure going, but Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) kept the game tied with 11 stops in the third to force the game to overtime.

Norwich had the first couple chances in the extra frame, before Trinity answered with pressure of their own. The Cadets would have a rush chance that was stopped by Carter, which the Bantams countered with a rush of their own with Exnerova burying the game winner.

Norwich will now return north to Kreitzberg Arena to face their second consecutive opponent from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) when they host Williams on Dec. 7 at 3 PM.
