HENNIKER, N.H.- The Norwich Men's Ice Hockey team rounded out their weekend doubleheader at New England College Saturday afternoon as New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play rolls along.
The former travel partners exchanged chances throughout the first period. In the first five minutes, the Cadets looked to assert themselves. After a brief Pilgrim flurry, Norwich went to the man advantage but were held to only one shot on goal. After the successful penalty kill, NEC found life eventually leading to their first power play. After that was killed off by Norwich, the Pilgrims kept the momentum going as the period wound down, but
Sami Molu (Toronto, On.) helped keep the game scoreless at the intermission.
The Cadets came roaring out of the locker room in the second period, holding the Pilgrims under siege, but NEC goaltender Anthony Beaulieu turned them away repeatedly. The siege continued throughout the period, including a powerplay halfway through, but Beaulieu stood tall keeping the game scoreless after 40 despite Norwich holding a 16-8 edge in shots in the period.
An early Norwich penalty in the third period gave the Pilgrims momentum in the third. Even though the kill was successful, NEC held the momentum and would later be the team to break through. A Cadet turnover at the defensive blue line gave birth to an odd man rush where Paul Waldhauser would bury the eventual game winner. Late in the period, Norwich pushed for the tie, but Beaulieu and the Pilgrims kept them at bay. With just over a minute left, Molu went to the bench for the extra attacker and the Pilgrims would score on the empty cage to take home the victory.
After a week off, Norwich will return to action Thanksgiving weekend when they travel to Middlebury for the LayerEight Shootout where they will face rival Plattsburgh State Nov. 29 at 3:30 PM.
