Volleyball: Cadets taken down by Pilgrims in Tuesday skirmish

HENNIKER, N.H. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team endured a 3-0 defeat (16-25, 12-25, 15-25) at New England College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday evening at Bridges Gym.

The Cadets enjoyed spurts of momentum throughout the opening set, holding back a handful of Pilgrim runs and remaining within striking distance at several points, including trailing just 17-15 at one point.  New England College claimed the 1-0 edge with a late rally, and carried that offensive rhythm into the second frame.

Norwich posed a challenge later in the second set, but could not overcome the Pilgrims' initial lead.  The tide began to turn in the third stanza, as the Cadets rushed back from a 19-11 deficit to close the gap to 20-15, but the effort was too late, as New England College held on to win in straight sets.

Abby Kanaga (Apopka, Fla.) led Norwich in kills, racking up seven, while Lillie Ells (Centerville, Mass.) tallied six.  Ava Nihill (Marshfield, Mass.) handed out 16 helpers, while Autumn Parkhurst (Parish, N.Y.) recorded 10 digs.

The Cadets will flip the calendar to November, returning home for the first time in over a month for a Senior Day conference tri-match on Saturday, Nov. 2.  Norwich will first host reigning conference champions Lasell University at 11:00 a.m., before the Lasers duke it out with Dean College at 1:00 p.m.  The Cadets will then honor their senior class prior to the final match of the day, as Kanaga, Nihill, and Giovanna Fruci (Wrentham, Mass.) will be recognized before their 3:00 p.m. showdown against the Bulldogs.
