HENNIKER, N.H.- In the opening portion of a men's and women's soccer twin bill, the Norwich Men's Soccer team took to Don Melander Field to take on New England College in a pivotal game as the two sides jockeyed for position within the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) table. In the end, senior captain
Kam Jorgenson (Titusville, Fla.) and sophomore midfielder
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) would shine.
Through most of the first half, the two sides traded chances but neither defense giving an inch. Late in the period, the Cadets got their chance and did not miss. Fuentes took a free kick on the right side of the attacking midfield after a Pilgrim foul. He sent the ball diagonally across the grass where it would find Jorgenson streaking through for a one touch goal to the bottom right corner to give Norwich the lead in the 43
rd minute.
Looking to answer, NEC generated three shot attempts out of the break. After their third attempt,
Nicolas Lanza (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) sent a goal kick to the midfield where it was corralled by
Dillon Hamrell (Williston, Vt.). Hamrell sent it across the field to Fuentes who would spring
Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) on a break and would make it a two goal Norwich lead. 15 minutes later, Fuentes would take a corner that would find Jorgenson's hip for his second goal of the game, and Fuentes's third helper.
The Pilgrims would find the back of the net in the 81
st minute and would press for more with Lanza making four of his six saves in the second half, preserving the 3-1 victory. The Cadets' road swing will continue into the weekend when they travel to Elms Saturday afternoon Oct. 26 for a 5 PM kickoff.
