KINGS POINT, N.Y.- Coming off their bye week, the Norwich Football team made their way through the five boroughs to the north shore of Long Island to resume New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon.
After the Cadets deferred the coin toss, the Mariners would get a first down immediately but could not sustain a drive with the Norwich defense forcing a fumble on 4
th and 1 just over midfield. After the offense took over,
Aidan Sullivan (Eliot, Maine) would find
Henri Bourque (Merrimack, N.H.) three times to get onto the fringe of the red zone but would be turned over on downs. On the ensuing Mariner drive they would break the ice with a touchdown.
Early in the second quarter, Norwich looked to answer stitching together a nine-play drive that covered 56 yards, highlighted by a
Jehric Hackney (Jericho, Vt.) 32-yard run, but they were once again turned away on the doorstep. Afterwards, Merchant Marine marched down the field to extend their lead and would add a third touchdown before the half.
In the second half, USMMA found the end zone four times in the second half, with the Cadets breaking the shutout in the fourth quarter when
Landon Beecher (Holliston, Mass.) finding
Ben Weers (Hebron, Conn.) for a 21 yard score soon after a
Jeremy Henault (Goffstown, N.H.) fumble recovery.
Individually, Bourque led the way with six receptions. On the defensive side of the ball,
Shayne Leddy (Spring Lake, N.J.) and
Christian Masonius (Belmar, N.J.) led the way with nine tackles and a tackle for loss each while
Maddox Reed (Spring Hill, Tenn.) had a sack and a fumble recovery.
The Cadets will return home next week to host Coast Guard in the Little Army-Navy game at 12 PM on Oct. 26.
