NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Four members of the Norwich University men's basketball team notched double-digits as the Cadets secured another dominant Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory, this time topping Elms College, 85-56, on Tuesday night in Andrews Hall.
Owen Liss (West Suffield, Conn.) showcased another automatic display, pouring in 26 points on 10-14 shooting while pulling down a game-best nine rebounds.Â
Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.) provided a significant spark off the bench with 16 points on a 6-11 clip, while
Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J.) and
Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) added 15 and 10 points, respectively, with Murray snagging four steals.
The Blazers struck first on a three-bomb on their first possession, but Liss's first basket and an old-fashioned three-point play from Jett pushed the Cadets ahead less than two minutes into the contest, giving the hosts a lead they would never relinquish.
Elms kept the game close throughout the initial stretch, trailing by seven nearly seven minutes into the game, but Norwich exploded behind a 13-2 run, capturing their largest lead of the half at 18, 30-12, on a pair of freebies from Olivero. The Blazers kept the Cadets within striking distance, yet Norwich prevented the visitors from whittling the advantage back down to single digits, taking a 15-point lead into the break.
The Blazers found some momentum out of halftime, curving into Norwich's defense and bringing the deficit down to eight, but the Cadets again erupted on another spurt, this time a 13-3 run. Norwich capitalized on a slew of Liss, Murray, and Jett jumpers, complete with a pair of and-one opportunities from
Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.) and Jett.
An emphatic dunk from Liss spurred further offense as the Cadets extended their lead past 20, holding the Blazers scoreless for the final 4:18 while ending the contest on an 11-0 run, capped off by a
Mohammed Kanneh (South Burlington, Vt.) basket.
Norwich dominated inside, holding a 52-40 advantage in points in the paint, while also maintaining a significant edge in fast-break points (23-4). The Cadets won the battle on the glass (41-35).
The Cadets carried a staggering 53.2% mark from the floor, while holding the Blazers to just 37.1%, with a woeful 14.3% mark from long range and a 2-8 clip from the charity stripe. Norwich, meanwhile, went 13-15 on freebies.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Johnson & Wales University for a 3:00 p.m. duel in Providence, R.I. The Cadets then travel to New England College on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
