NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team opened the second half of their campaign with a non-conference affair with Trinity (Conn.) Tuesday night.
The chess match began early in this one, with offensive chances at a premium all night and both teams turning the neutral zone into a quagmire. Late in the period, the Bantams were awarded the first powerplay of the game, which carried into the second period, but was unsuccessful. The opening period concluded with both sides having seven shots, and minimal high-quality chances.
Trinity broke open the scoring just before the halfway point of the second period. A Kate French takeaway in the left-wing corner of the Bantam attacking zone went behind the net for Lillian Cassidy who put it in front for Ava Gosnell breaking the seal and putting Trinity on top.
Late in the second, the Bantams would go back to the powerplay, where they would extend their lead. After the initial chance by Marta Mazzocchi was denied, the switched places with Anne Levia who skated towards the slot and roofed a wrist shot for the powerplay tally with 36 seconds left in the period giving Trinity a two-goal lead heading into intermission.
Early in the third, the Cadets went on their lone powerplay of the game, where
Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.) had several golden opportunities, but was denied by netminder Hannah Leclair. Leclair made a few saves down the stretch to preserve the win for the Bantams with the Cadets holding a 9-3 shot advantage in the final period.
Norwich will look to get back on the winning track when they return to New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action with a trip to Southern Maine on Jan 5 at 6 PM.
