As we begin the second half of the winter athletic season on various types of playing surfaces, we also opened the second semester of the academic year. With the page being turned, it's time to look at how our student-athletes performed in the classroom during the first half of the school year.
A grand total of 227 student-athletes achieved the honor of making the Dean's List, meaning they achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher, while 53 finished with a perfect 4.0 GPA earning places on the President's List.
Of the 22 varsity programs that comprise the Norwich Athletic Department, 12 of them finished with a team GPA at or above the department average of 3.3. Leading the way in terms of team success in the classroom is women's cross country with a 3.73 team GPA, with eight of their nine rostered players making the Dean's List, seven of which finished with a GPA between 3.75 and 3.9.
Not far behind the cross-country runners are the skaters on men's ice hockey who finished the fall with a 3.71, with 19 making the Dean's List, and tying with baseball for the most players on the President's List with seven, with football having the highest number of Dean's List representatives with 21. According to the NCAA, "Colleges and universities in Division III place the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students' academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete's athletics activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete's educational experience…." The student-athletes at Norwich University have exemplified that statement for the first 50 years of Division III athletics and will continue to in the years to come.
