Women's Basketball: Cadets' hot start, triage of double-digit scorers not enough in loss at Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's basketball team dropped a 68-51 affair to Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt at the Jean Yawkey Center on Saturday afternoon.

Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) led a trio of double-digit scorers, tallying 17 points to pace the Cadets.  Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.) went 5-7 from the floor en route to a 16-point showing, while Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) flirted with a double-double on 10 points and nine caroms.

The Cadets were scorching to kick things off, as Brewster responded to Emmanuel's first basket with back-to-back three-pointers to ignite Norwich's offense.  After exchanging baskets, the Cadets again extended their lead, courtesy of Brewster and Bernier, capturing a pair of nine-point advantages and maintaining a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Saints made strides out of the gates, but Norwich weathered the initial storm, despite Emmanuel reclaiming the lead and holding onto it for the remainder of the half.  The Cadets stayed within striking distance, as a McGinn lay-in brought Emmanuel's lead down to five at the intermission.

Emmanuel burst out of halftime with momentum, building a double-digit lead but still could not put the Cadets away, with Norwich bringing the lead down to single-digits on a pair of occasions.  An early fourth-quarter run by the Saints would prove to be the difference-makers, however.

Norwich forced 22 Emmanuel turnovers, maintaining a 25-21 lead in points off turnovers over the Saints.

The Cadets will now look ahead to Tuesday, Jan. 16, with a 5:00 p.m. tip at Regis College on tap in Weston, Mass.
