Volleyball: Cadets split home GNAC tri-match, hand Saints first conference loss

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University volleyball team usurped the conference-undefeated Emmanuel College (24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 7-25, 16-14) before falling to Elms College (23-25, 16-25, 15-25) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action in Andrews Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Abby Kanaga (Apopka, Fla.) was a rallying figure in Norwich's monumental win, tallying a team-best 11 kills and five block assists.  Autumn Parkhurst (Parish, N.Y.) recorded 21 digs, while Gina Caraccio (Churchville, Pa.) dished out 36 assists.

Norwich fought back after dropping the first set, rushing past a 20-19 deficit to the Saints in the second set behind a 6-1 spurt.  The Cadets, likewise, rallied from a 5-0 hole to open the third set, ending the set on a 5-1 run to claim victory.

After Emmanuel knotted things up at 2-2, Norwich again overcame a Saints lead, fighting back from a 13-10 deficit on a 6-1 run to topple the Saints.

Fortunes were not as kind to the Cadets in their second game against the Blazers, where Lillie Ells (Centerville, Mass.) paced the team with seven kills.

Norwich hung strong in the opening set, nearly claiming victory before Elms stole it on a 4-0 spurt.  The Blazers sealed the deal with back-to-back wins in sets two and three.

The Cadets will now step out of conference play and hit the road for a non-conference tilt at Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday, Oct. 3.  Gametime is set for 6:30 p.m.
