BOSTON, Mass. - Despite claiming the early momentum, the Norwich University men's lacrosse team saw its hopes for back-to-back Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships erased in a GNAC Tournament Quarterfinal loss to Emmanuel College, 16-5, on Clemente Field on Saturday evening.
Four Cadets registered goals, with
Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) ripping in a pair to orchestrate Norwich's offense.Â
Matt Meehan (Norfolk, Mass.),
Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.), and
Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) all added one goal apiece.
Norwich found a flow offensively early, thanks to Meehan breaking the scoreless deadlock just 42 seconds into the contest off a Johnston helper to put the Cadets ahead. The Saints promptly answered about a minute later, but
Christian Masonius (Belmar, N.J.) found Seidel for Norwich's second tally.
The Cadets' optimism was not to be, however, as Emmanuel rattled off 13 straight to take control. Norwich reasserted itself minutes into the fourth quarter courtesy of scores from Seidel, McKay, and Johnston that whittled the lead back down to single-digits, but the Saints iced the game on a pair of goals that extended their lead back to double-figures.
Luke Boland (Tolland, Conn.) turned away 13 shots in the crease in a full 60 minutes, while
Thomas Muraski (Keller, Texas) matched Emmanuel's mark in face off wins with 12 on his own.
Ryan Castle led seven Emmanuel scorers with a six-goal performance, with Cole Cloney adding five.
The Cadets end the 2023 campaign with a 6-12 overall record and a 4-6 mark in conference action. The Saints, meanwhile, will move on to the GNAC Semifinals and host fifth-seeded Dean College on Tuesday, May 2.
