Box Score 4 NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt) shined this weekend as the Cadets split their doubleheaders, going 2-2, after playing Albertus Magnus on Saturday and Anna-Maria on Sunday. In the four games, McGinn went 8-for-13 (.615%) at the plate, including a homerun, while being equally dominant in the circle pitching 14 innings with 11 strikeouts and only allowing 1 earned run in the three combined pitching outings.
The Saturday doubleheader against Albertus Magnus College (AMC) saw two very different games. The first game saw the Falcons dominate from the second inning on as they cruised to a victory. The game started very well for the Cadets as they played a surging Falcons squad. The Falcons' leadoff batter reached on a single but was later thrown out by catcher
Rachel Kemp (Warwick, R.I.) on an attempted steal. After a walk and a fly out, the Cadets seemed in a good position to get out of the top of the first inning with two outs and a runner on second. But, the next batter hit a double which brought in the first run of the game. A strike out by
Kennedy White (Randolph Center, Vt.) ended the inning with the visitors leading 1-0. In the bottom of the first inning, McGinn led off with a single in a game where she would go 3-for-3 from the plate. It appeared the Cadets were poised to bring in a few runs, having runners on second and third with only one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the Norwich offensive threat. The Falcon offense, aided by a pair of costly Norwich errors, scored six runs in the top of the second inning to take control of the game which they would eventually win 11-0 in five innings.
The second game of the Saturday doubleheader was a tight contest in which the Cadets outplayed their opponent for the majority of the game. McGinn was dominant in the circle, pitching a complete game while striking out seven without allowing an earned run. An error in the top of the fourth inning allowed the Falcons to put the first run on the board. Later, the Cadets loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a fielder's choice at home plate and a strikeout ended the inning without Norwich being able to push any runs over the plate. It was the best opportunity the Cadets would have to add runs in the game which ended 2-0.
Sunday saw a renewed Norwich team take the field. In the first game, the Cadets won 6-3 in extra innings while collecting 11 hits and only having a single error. The back and forth game never saw either team hold a lead at the end of an inning until the final inning. McGinn would begin the scoring for the Cadets with a solo homerun to leadoff the top of the 3rd inning. Anna Maria College was able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. The game would remain tied until the top of the 8th inning when White doubled to score
Laura Deaton (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), who by overtime rules began the inning on second base. The lone Norwich error would allow the Cats to score in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the game even further.
Emma DeGoosh (Bradford, Vt.) began the final extra inning on second base and was moved to third by a
Taylor Farnsworth sacrifice.
Sydney Wood (Proctor, Vt.) then singled in DeGoosh to give the Cadets the lead. With two outs and runners on second and third,
Nina Biello (Cranston, R.I.) hit a line drive to score Wood, and was ultimately the game winning run. The Cadets were aided by an Anna Maria error after Kempf hit a fly ball. The error allowed
Brook Pawloswski and Biello to alertly add two more insurance runs for the 6-2 lead. The bottom of the ninth inning saw the Cats score only once. With the runner beginning on second base, McGinn, who would earn the win as a relief pitcher, struck out the first two batters of the inning. A double would bring home the only run allowed in the inning before a ground out ended the game.
The final game of the weekend saw the Cadets win in dramatic fashion. After giving up three runs in the bottom of the first, the Cadet defense settled in. Neither side would really pose any true offensive threat until the bottom of the fourth inning. A Cadet error with two outs allowed the inning to continue and the Cats would add a run when the next batter doubled to center field. But, Norwich would not give up anything else the rest of the day. In the top of the sixth inning, Norwich exploded for five runs to take a lead they would not relinquish. A Cat error got everything started an allowed
Ashley Parker to reach first base. Biello drew a walk and Deaton followed with a single to load the bases. Two runs scored as the Cadets put the ball in play and the Cats chose to take the easier out at first base instead of throwing home.
Julia Vawter singled in another run to get Norwich within one. Farnsworth then hit a two-run homerun to give the Cadets the lead. McGinn and the Cadet defense would then shut the door, only allowing one baserunner in the final two innings, to secure the first doubleheader sweep of the season.
The Cadets will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Simmons University for a Saturday doubleheader before a Sunday senior day double against Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
