NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's lacrosse team saw a valiant upset effort fall short in an 18-14 loss to Emmanuel College in a Saturday afternoon Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Maddie Etherton (Johnstown, N.Y.) and
Michaila Furchak (Nyack, N.Y.) were automatic offensively, netting four goals apiece to lead Norwich.Â
Valentina Drown (Acton, Maine) had a career showing, tallying five points behind two goals and three minutes, passing the 100th-career point plateau in the process.Â
Athena Merck (West Yarmouth, Mass.),
Ellie Moriarty (Stowe, Vt.),
Julia Proto (Orange, Conn.), and
Emma O'Neill (Hamburg, N.Y.) posted one goal each.
The Cadets had to fight back from an early deficit, overcoming a quick 3-0 Emmanuel lead and an eventual 5-2 advantage behind a three-goal run between the end of the first and start of the second quarters on goals from Proto, Drown, and Furchak.
The 5-5 deadlock would swiftly be erased, however, as the Saints' Avery Robillard kicked off a 4-0 spurt that the Cadets could not recover from, despite back-to-back scores from Etherton that whittled the edge back down to two.
Even with another stretch of four-straight goals by the Saints, Norwich succeeded in trimming Emmanuel's lead to three on a pair of occasions, but could not halt an Emmanuel offense that saw 10 different players score.
Norwich scooped up 23 ground balls and won the battle in draw controls, 19-17.Â
Maeve Noble-Lowe (Freedom, Maine) logged 12 saves in the crease.
The Cadets will hit the road for two GNAC tilts, first traveling to Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday, Apr. 19, for a 4:00 p.m. draw. Two days later, Norwich will head to Regis College for a Friday duel.
