NORTHFIELD, Vt. - A second-half rally by the Norwich University men's lacrosse team was shut down in a 14-7 loss to Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.) and
Coley Bagwell (York, Pa.) paced the Cadets with two goals apiece, while
Matt Meehan (Norfolk, Mass.),
Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Mass.), and
Mitchell McKay (Lynnfield, Mass.) added a goal each.
The Saints controlled the rhythm from the opening face-off, putting in a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes before ripping in six-straight scores in the second quarter to capture an 8-0 edge. Norwich finally found itself on the board with back-to-back unassisted goals from Bagwell and McKay in a 22-second stretch.
Emmanuel added an insurance goal before the halftime break, and Ryan Castle logged his fourth goal just five minutes into the third frame. The Cadets found some momentum throughout the third, seizing on three man-up opportunities to trim Emmanuel's lead down to six, 11-5, but the Saints regained control with three-straight tallies.
Seidel and Johnston concluded the Cadets' attempt to rally, as Johnston capitalized on a late Emmanuel penalty and found the back of the net with seconds left on the clock.
Castle, alongside Thomas Quigley, led the Saints in scoring with four goals each.
Norwich will jump back out of league play on Wednesday, Mar. 22, hosting Curry College for a non-conference bout at 4:00 p.m. on Sabine Field.
