NORTHFIELD, Vt. – An error occurred in the application of the overtime rules in the March 16
th Women's Lacrosse game between Norwich University and Rivier University. After a cooperative effort among the athletic directors of both schools, the head coaches, the assignor of women's lacrosse officials, and the GNAC Commissioner; in the true spirit of Division III athletics, the decision has been made to award the victory to Rivier.
The game ended regulation tied at 9-9 and subsequently went to overtime. Sarah Lachance scored an unassisted Rivier goal with 4:37 left in the extra period. The overtime rules in Women's Lacrosse calls for a sudden death overtime, so the game should have ended immediately, with a 10-9 Rivier victory. The period was allowed to continue, and
Quinn Mustone scored two unassisted goals for Norwich in the final 2:07. At the time, the game was incorrectly awarded as a victory for Norwich based on the extended playing time after the initial goal of overtime. After a post-game review, and a ruling from the GNAC Commissioner, the decision to award the victory to Rivier was communicated to both institutions.
The Cadets are currently 1-3 on the season and will return to action for a home tilt against Johnson & Wales University on Saturday, March 18.
