STANDISH, Maine - Despite a trio of double-digit performances, the Norwich University men's basketball team could not hang on to a second-half lead in a 76-65 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss at Saint Joseph's College at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.
Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) was red-hot, drilling seven treys to finish with 25 points while snagging two steals and dishing out two helpers.
Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.) poured in three long-range bombs to tally 13 points, while
Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) added 10 points.
Norwich rushed out to a quick 6-0 lead on three-straight layups from Lewis Jr, DuBrul, and Murray, until a Monks timeout spurred the Saint Joseph's offense. The Monks earned their first lead minutes later, 12-11, with both teams subsequently trading several leads.
Saint Joseph's pulled ahead comfortably minutes later, erasing a 21-17 Norwich lead behind a 14-0 run. Murray and DuBrul's hot shooting clicked at the right time, as the pair combined for five three-pointers in the closing five and a half minutes of the frame to trail by just one, 37-36, at the break.
The Cadets held strong despite Saint Joseph's clinging onto the lead, eventually reclaiming the advantage on an emphatic stretch that included a
Tom Dooling (Boston, Mass.) bomb and
Chris Hough (Bloomfield, Conn.) that handed Norwich a five-point edge.
The Monks wasted no time coming alive again, evaporating Norwich's 49-44 lead behind a 31-8 run to take their largest lead, 75-57, en route to earning the double-digit victory.
Ashtyn Abbott paced Saint Joseph's with 19 points and 12 boards, while Camryn Yorke tallied 17 points. Griffin Foley added 14 points.
Norwich will return to action with a significant GNAC tilt next Saturday, Feb. 11, traveling to Lasell University for a 4:00 p.m. game in Newton, Mass.
