NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team closed out the 2022-23 season in impressive fashion, leading from wire-to-wire in a 77-58 Senior Day victory over Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action in Andrews Hall.
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) finished her sophomore campaign with another double-digit showcase, posting 23 points on 9-16 shooting to go with 11 caroms.Â
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) drilled three treys en route to an 20-point performance, while
Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.) dished out six helpers while adding eight points.
The Cadets tipped off the affair on a quick 7-0 spurt in two minutes of play and never looked back, despite the AMCATS succeeding in bringing the lead back down to a one-possession game. Another run, this one a 10-0 rush, pushed Norwich ahead by double-figures.
Norwich took that double-digit lead into the second quarter and prevented Anna Maria from gaining any momentum, as a handful of baskets from Brewster and McGinn kept the AMCATS at bay. An errant foul on a three-pointer at the buzzer allowed Anna Maria to head into the break trailing by 11.
That foul granted the AMCATS some further breathing room out of the break, as Norwich's advantage was trimmed down to five on three occasions. Succinct passing and clutch buckets from
Brittany Graham (Rye, N.H.), Bernier, and
Rachel Botala (Grand Isle, Vt.) pushed the Cadets back to double-digit territory, a place they would remain.
Norwich's lead would balloon to as large as 21 during the fourth quarter, thanks to stellar baskets in the closing minutes from
Alexis Matte (Lebanon, N.H.) and
Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.), with a final jumper from
Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.) handing the Cadets the 19-point win.
"Today's win was a great way to end both our season and the careers of our senior student-athletes. We are thankful to Anna Maria College for their understanding in allowing our injured players on the floor for the opening tip," Head Coach
Mark Zacher said. "From there, our team played well and showed the promise that lies ahead for this young squad in the future. They are a very special group and, even with the promise for next year, it was bittersweet as we say good-bye to our seniors!"
The Cadets held significant advantages in second chance points (14-4), bench points (44-18), and points in the paint (32-22).
Marinique Reddin and Gina Parmenter paced the AMCATS with 13 points apiece.
Prior to tip-off, Norwich honored its four graduating student-athletes in Graham, Matte,
Katelyn DeSilvio (Chelmsford, Mass.),
Bailey Reilly (Milton, Vt.), as well as student-assistantÂ
Cadafe Williams. DeSilvio and Reilly saw their first college action in recent history, having unfortunately been sidelined with injuries.
Norwich concludes the 2022-23 campaign with an 11-14 overall record and 7-10 mark in GNAC play, winning its last three tilts over Lasell University, Colby-Sawyer College, and Anna Maria.
