NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's basketball team avenged a loss to Anna Maria College in an emphatic showcase, topping the AMCATS, 74-52, in the Cadets' 2022-23 season finale in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash in Andrews Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) paced an effort that saw four Cadets log double-digits, pouring in 18 points on four long-range bombs.Â
Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) posted 15 points in his final collegiate contest, while
Tom Dooling (Boston, Mass.) was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc to finish with 11 points.Â
Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.) rounded out the effort with a 10-point, 12-carom double-double.
The AMCATS got the offense rolling early, striking first on the opening possession before the Cadets erupted on a 24-4 run over the ensuing 10 minutes of action to take their largest lead of 18, 24-6, at the 9:09 mark. Anna Maria trickled the lead back down to 11, before clutch baskets from Dooling and Lewis Jr. halted the run.
Anna Maria remained within striking distance despite Norwich taking a 13-point lead at the half, trimming the Cadets' advantage down to 10 to start the second stanza.
A 42-32 lead swiftly ballooned, however, courtesy of a 15-2 run that was capped off by one of Murray's critical shots from long range. Norwich's subsequent stout defense spelled doom for Anna Maria, as the Cadets took their biggest lead, 71-44, with just under three minutes left on Lewis Jr.'s final collegiate basket, a rainbow three from the top of the key that created a seismic commotion in Andrews Hall.
Charlie Rohr (Glen Allen, Va.) closed Norwich's offensive onslaught, drilling a long-range trey from beyond the elbow en route to Norwich's 22-point victory.
"A great win today for our team. I thought we played well on both ends of the court. We did a nice job defensively, taking them out of their sets and forcing them to play late into the shot clock," Head Coach
Paul Booth said. "But the key factor in the game was our ability to handle their pressure. It allowed us to move the ball offensively and get great shots."
Booth continued, "The win allowed us to end the season on a positive note and send our lone senior
Donovan Lewis Jr. out with a win. Donovan has been such a key contributor since the day he stepped on campus five years ago. I was so happy to see him end his career with a victory with his family in attendance to see the game."
The Cadets owned edges in points off turnovers (18-13) and fast break points (15-8).
Norwich's defense prevented any AMCAT from reaching double-figures, as Jayden Dickerson led the way with seven points.
Prior to tip-off, Norwich honored Lewis Jr., who closes a historic campaign in maroon and gold. The fifth-year post player ends his career sitting sixth on the all-time scoring list with 1,380 points after the 15-point showcase today. The Cadet men conclude their season at 12-13 overall and 6-11 in GNAC action.Â
