NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a competitive 67-59 loss to the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the second game of the 2023 Ed Hockenbury Classic on Saturday afternoon in Andrews Hall.
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) paced the Cadets offensively, pouring 21 points while snagging three steals.Â
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) posted a dominant double-double inside, tallying 18 points while hauling down 13 caroms.
The first quarter saw both teams exchange leads, as a Skye Dugan trey kicked off an opening two-and-a-half-minute stretch where the Cadets captured a 10-9 lead on a
Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.) jumper. The ensuing three minutes were scoreless, but the Bengals broke the stagnancy and took a six-point lead. Norwich evened things up, however, on a
Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.) and a triage of freebies from
Sage MacAuley (Barre, Vt.).
Norwich controlled most of the second frame, but Fort Kent would not be turned away, eventually reclaiming the lead in the third stanza that would grow to as large as 13 in the fourth quarter. The Cadets would have opportunities to trim the Bengals' lead, but could not convert, tallying a few free-throws to end the game and bring Fort Kent's lead down to eight.
For their efforts against the Bengals and Fisher College yesterday, Brewster and McGinn were both tabbed to the All-Classic Team.
The opening game of Saturday's portion of the Hockenbury Classic saw Hamilton College claim a 60-20 victory over Fisher.
