NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's basketball team picked up right where they left off from before Thanksgiving, securing another double-digit victory for their third-straight win in a row, downing in-state foe Vermont State University Lyndon, 91-77, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Andrews Hall.
Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) led the offensive onslaught, going 8-15 from the floor to finish with a game-high 22 points.Â
Joe Joe DuBrul (Shelburne, Vt.) just trailed with 20 points, drilling a triage of long-range bombs to go with four steals.Â
Owen Liss (West Suffield, Conn.) added 13 points in 22 minutes of action off the bench, while
Rodrick Pearson (Hartford, Conn.) was a force inside, tallying 10 points, six boards, and six blocks.
The Cadets took a few minutes to find their footing, as the Hornets corralled the lead on a quick Gregory Gonyea Jr. layup less than a minute in. Layups from Murray and
Nabiyu Ndiaye (Barcelona, Spain) got the Norwich offense flowing, as the Cadets subsequently erased a four-point VTSU Lyndon lead behind an 8-0 spurt on a Pearson jumper and back-to-back treys from DuBrul.
The Hornets evened things back out nearly halfway through the opening frame, but Norwich shot down any chance of surrendering their lead, embarking on a 15-2 run to claim a 13-point lead in just three minutes. Lyndon would whittle it back down to single-digits over the closing stretch of the first half and into the second stanza, but a momentum-shifting stretch comprised of a Pearson dunk and Murray three-pointer again halted the Hornets' hopes.
DuBrul pushed Norwich past the 20-point threshold on his third trey, 77-55, followed by a pair of Ndiaye freebies which would grant the Cadets their largest lead of the night at 24. Despite strong efforts by the Hornets to close the game, Norwich's lead proved insurmountable, as the Cadets claimed the 14-point win.
Norwich thrived in numerous statistical categories, owning leads in points off turnovers (40-18), fast break points (31-16), and points in the paint (56-30). The Cadets, who set a season-high in points in the win, were scorching from the floor, carrying clips of 50.7% (FGs) and 41.2% (3PTs), while also recording 10 blocks defensively.
The Cadets will take their three-game winning streak into this weekend's Ed Hockenbury Classic, which sees Norwich take on the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 6:00 p.m. The day will be closed out by Framingham State University and 18th-ranked Trinity College battling at 8:00 p.m. A consolation game and championship game will ensue on Sunday, Dec. 3, with game times slated for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. More information on the Hockenbury Classic is
