Men's Ice Hockey: Cadets Shutout Wildcats, Add Five Multipoint Efforts

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- Looking to build off their first New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) win the night before, the Norwich Men's Ice Hockey team returned to home ice on Veterans Day to take on Johnson & Wales.

After pregame festivities, including the puck for the ceremonial puck drop being repelled from the rafters, the Cadets held a decided territorial advantage early putting six shot on Wildcat goaltender Jake Perrin in the first three minutes. While keeping their foot on the gas pedal, a shot from the left blueline by Matt Harvey (Fort Covington, N.Y.) found its way into net front traffic, where it deflected off the stick of Bryan O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y.) and over Perrin's glove hand to break the ice at the 4:20 mark.

Even though JWU would generate shots on freshman Bryce Walcarius (Aylmer, On.), making his collegiate debut, most of them came from outside the high danger areas with Walcarius limiting second chance opportunities. After a brief JWU press was smother, Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.) rushed the other way. His original shot was stopped, but Patrick Del Vecchio (Mississauga, On.) touched the juicy rebound over to Mikey Mackenzie (Londonderry, N.H.) making it a two goal game at the first intermission.

Two and a half minutes into the middle frame, the Cadets went on the power play. Off the draw to open the man advantage, Cooper Bertrand (Caledon, On.) worked the puck down low on the left side to Johnny Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) who quickly sent it to Kerner in the slot for a one timer that stretched the Norwich lead to three. The opening of the second period created a well-traveled path to the penalty box, as both sides took numerous fouls with both teams finally returning to five-on-five play halfway through the period. Off a faceoff, with five minutes to play in the period, the Wildcats looked to break out, but Del Vecchio picked the pocket of the counter attacker, and got the puck to Nick Foster (Amherst, Mass.) who sent a wrist shot from the deep slot by Perrin to make it a four-goal lead at second intermission.

The Cadets would add the fifth goal of the game seven minutes into the third. A dump in by Harvey from the neutral zone bounced off Perrin's pad to Del Vecchio. The winger dished it in front to his center, Patrick O'Neal (Indiana, Pa.), potting the puck into a yawning cage. Late in the period, a point shot from Adam Schuchart (Marietta, Ga.) pinballed off Owen Sclisizzi (Milton, On.) to Mackenzie for his second of the game and making the final score 6-0 earning Walcarius his first collegiate win and shutout in his debut.

"I'm very pleased with a win, and a home sweep," said Head Coach Cam Ellsworth. "I thought our guys were tough and disciplined in their effort tonight."

Next up for the Cadets is a trip to Saratoga to take on undefeated Skidmore on Nov 17 at 7 PM.
