BOSTON, Mass.- Looking to build momentum after their first New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) victory last weekend, the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team shipped up to Boston to face UMass Boston on their first road trip of the season.
The Beacons were caught on their heels early, as they went on the penalty kill 29 seconds into the contest on a slashing minor. With two seconds remaining on the kill, UMass Boston went back to the sin bin granting the Cadets a brief 5-on-3 before going back to the normal man advantage. With the Cadets continuing to press, they broke through four minutes into the game with a wrist shot from the top of the slot by freshman
Livia Brooks (Walpole, Mass.) for her first collegiate goal, and Norwich's first powerplay tally of the young season.
When the teams returned to even strength, the Cadets kept their foot on the gas pedal looking to lengthen their lead. Even when they went to the penalty kill, Norwich suppressed any offense the Beacons mounted as they did not tally a shot on goal until the 8:25 mark of the frame. Not long after the halfway point of the period,
Marja Linzbichler (Graz, Austria) would find
Rylie McIntyre (Brunswick, Maine) who got the puck to Brooks once again for her second goal of the game.
That only fueled the fire even more, as Norwich would keep pounding UMass Boston goaltender Leah Bosch with shots keeping the Beacons under siege. Eventually, the two teams would end up skating four aside where Brooks would complete her first career hat trick with
Melianne Reynolds (Sherbrooke, Que.) and
Wilda Ohman (Lulea, Sweden) tallying assists leading to a 3-0 Norwich lead at the end of 20 minutes while holding a 20-4 shot advantage.
It would only take three minutes for the Cadets to find the back of the net again, with another first year in
Madison Anderson (Green Bay, Wis.) potting her second of the season with McIntyre and Ohman getting their second assists on the night. The Norwich siege continued as the period went along until Brooks found Anderson at the net mouth to make the Cadet lead five adding an assist to a four-point performance, the secondary assist going to
Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, N.B.).
The Norwich barrage continued into the third period; however, the Beacons were able to break the shutout eight and a half minutes into the final frame making the score 5-1, which would hold up until the final buzzer.
"It was a great team win tonight," said Head Coach
Sophie Leclerc Doherty. "It was great to see first years Liv Brooks and
Madison Anderson get rewarded; they are super talented young players and are fun to watch. We are excited to get back at it tomorrow."
Norwich continues its road swing Saturday afternoon when they visit Johnson & Wales for a 3 PM puck drop.
