Men's Soccer: Swett Scores Two as Cadets Top Monks for the First Time Since 2014

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Junior defender Cullen Swett (Williston, Vt.) converted two penalty kicks in Tuesday afternoon's 2-0 victory for the Norwich Men's Soccer team over Saint Joseph's College of Maine. It was the first conference loss for the Monks on the season, and the first time the Cadets have defeated the Monks since Oct 10, 2014. The Cadets handed Saint Joseph's only the second regular season GNAC loss in the last 66 games, a time frame spanning nearly eight years.

Penalty kick number one came in the 15th minute after Troy Galler (Marshwood, Mass.) got hauled down by the Monks defense deep in the box. Swett sent a ball off his left foot to the bottom left corner, out of the reach of goalkeeper Liam Foley.

After the penalty kick, the game evolved into a defensive chess match. Both sides kept each other to the outside, with limited space to make plays. The Cadets created another opportunity in the 66th minute when a hard charging Kyle Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev.) was slide tackled in the box, resulting in another penalty. Swett, with the hot left foot, was chosen to take it. He would convert, sending a ball to the bottom right corner, doubling the Norwich lead.

Soon after, the Monks would press the attack, notching their first shot on goal in the game in the 85th minute, despite holding a 7-2 second half shot advantage. They would have a flurry of shots in the dying seconds, but Nicolas Lanza (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) shut the door, in addition to a save by Swett at the buzzer to seal the deal.

"The players deserve tremendous credit," Head Coach Staige Davis said. "They worked so hard and did all the things it takes to win against a top team."

This marks three consecutive victories for the Cadets, all in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. They will look to make it four in a row when they host Elms on Oct 6 at 7 PM.
