NORTHFIELD, Vt.- In the ladder half of the soccer senior day double header, Norwich Men's Soccer stretched their unbeaten streak to nine games with a 1-1 draw with Johnson & Wales Saturday afternoon.
With the rain continuing to pour down after the senior day ceremonies, the Wildcats held the early edge which yielded their lone goal. Off their second corner kick of the game, the ball appeared to be cleared from the net mouth by the defense. Instead, the ball found the right foot of Conner Elliott from 20 yards out. JWU kept Norwich on their heels for the rest of the first half with
Kirk Rogers (Lebanon, Ohio) making three saves and keeping it a one goal game at the half.
Quickly out of the break, the Cadet offense found their legs and tied the game. In the 54
th minute, a centering attempt by
Hunter Lortie (Manchester, N.H.) was batted away by Wildcat keeper Jacob Friedman, but it found the right foot of senior
Nathan Statires (Hampton, N.H.) who netted the equalizer. As the half wore on, the game into a chippy affair between two sides jockeying for positioning in the conference playoff picture.
"It was a bit of a slow start for us today, and was a tale of two halves," said Head Coach
Staige Davis. "I thought we played well in the second half and were a bit unlucky not to break the tie. I'm happy with how the team responded after going down at home, and that we are undefeated against the three best teams in the conference."
Playoff matchups will come down to the final day of the regular season. With one point separating the four seed and the six seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), the Cadets will play for a chance to host a GNAC Quarterfinal game when they round out the regular season with a trip to Colby-Sawyer Tuesday afternoon at 3 PM.
