Men's Basketball: Cadets drop heartbreaker to Pride, Liss nets 16 points

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Regis College broke a halftime tie to escape Andrews Hall with a win over the Norwich University men's basketball team, as the Cadets dropped a 67-65 thriller to the Pride on Thursday night's make-up game in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Owen Liss (West Suffield, Conn.) paced the Norwich offense, going 6-10 from the floor to post 16 points and seven boards, two assists, two blocks, and two steals.  Donovan Lewis Jr. (Savannah, Ga.) rounded out the double-digit tandem with 14 points on a 6-8 clip.

The Pride opened up the contest on back-to-back baskets from Russell Rau, giving Regis a lead they would not relinquish until an 11-0 run from the Cadets turned a three-point Pride lead into an eight-point Norwich edge.  The Cadets would extend their lead to as large as 11 after a Jalen Olivero (Holyoke, Mass.) jumper, but it was quickly evaporated by a 10-0 spurt over the ensuing minute.

After heading to the locker room with a 36-all deadlock, the Pride came out of the gates to capture a lead for the next 17 minutes of play, before a trip to the charity stripe from Nabiyu Ndiaye (Barcelona, Spain) knotted things up again at 60-60.  A pair of freebies from Liss handed the Cadets their final advantage, before a critical Zakaria Latifi go-ahead trey at the 2:06 mark would seal the deal.

A personal 4-0 run from Justin Evelyn pushed the Pride's lead to five, seemingly icing the game until Kohlby Murray (Fair Haven, Vt.) drained a long-range bomb to bring Regis' edge back down to two.  A turnover on an ensuing Regis freebie would grant the Cadets one last opportunity, but stalwart defense on the closing possession handed the Pride the two-point win.

Rau led Regis with 31 points, while Devante Thompson and Evelyn tallied 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Cadets will look to close out the week with a key GNAC contest against Rivier University on Saturday, Jan. 28.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
