Women's Soccer: Norwich drops non-conference tilt to Beavers after second-half goal

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich offense created numerous opportunities throughout Sunday's matinee matchup against University of Maine-Farmington, as the Cadets launched 10 shots on goal and curated 11 corner kick opportunities. However, a rally in the 55th minute by the Beavers, scored on one of their four shots on goal taken during the afternoon, resulted in a 1-0 setback at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Freshman Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.) took three shots on target, and was one of a trio of Cadets that recorded two or more shots on goal during the bout. Freshman Abby Bruce (Peru N.Y.) and sophomore Lindsey Duggan (Belmont, N.H.) each recorded two shots on goal as senior Tara Grogan (Statesville, N.C.), junior Jillian Patria (Rindge, N.H.) and sophomore Destiny Sanchez (Odessa, Fla.) also placed attempts on target.

Graduate student goalkeeper Kim Watt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) stopped three of four shots faced, and anchored the Cadets' defense, which only allowed two corner kicks and committed one foul on the day.

The Norwich offense controlled the flow of the game from the outset, earning a corner kick at the two-minute mark taken by Patria, who would also launch the Cadets' first shot of the game in the fifth minute. Roy would place Norwich's first shot on target in the 15th minute, an attempt saved by Beavers' goalkeeper Paige Gonya, the first of nine UMaine-Farmington saves on the afternoon.

Ultimately, Norwich would take nine shots in the first half, including five shots on goal, and earn five corner kicks. However, UMaine-Farmington would take the lead in the 55th minute, countering Norwich after a flurry of attempts by the Cadets in the form of three corner kicks over the first seven minutes of the second period.

Norwich continued to place the pressure on the Beavers over the final 30 minutes of the bout, as shots by Bruce, Duggan and Roy were saved and a pair of corner kicks by Duggan in the final eight minutes fell short of scoring the equalizer.

The Cadets will close out non-district play on Wednesday, Sept. 7 as Norwich will head to Castleton University for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Spartans. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play will begin the following Wednesday, Sept. 14, as the Cadets will take on University of St. Joseph (Conn.) in in West Hartford. Norwich will return to Haynes Family Stadium on Sept. 16 for a 4 p.m. showdown against Regis College (Mass.).
