WENHAM, Mass. - The Norwich men's soccer team scooped up its first win of the season in commanding fashion, coasting past Gordon College, 3-0, in non-conference action at Brigham Complex on Saturday night.
Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) racked up a pair of goals in the victory, bookending an added goal by sophomore
Cullen Swett (Williston, Vt.). Thongsythavong set the tone early, receiving a long kick from
Aidan Dwyer (Glastonbury, Conn.) and heading it past a defender and the reach of Thomas Reardon to put Norwich ahead, 1-0.
Both teams would remain steadfast defensively after Thongsythavong's goal at the 8:11 mark, with no further shots coming in the opening stanza. Swett would break the mold almost immediately at the flip of the half, as a long-range penalty kick ricocheted off the hands of Reardon and got him on the ground, giving Swett enough time to capitalize with his first goal of the season.
Thongsythavong would tack on another in the 64th minute, utilizing some fancy footwork to navigate past Nathan Starzl and a diving Reardon. The Scots would have a pair of opportunities to score with shots on goal, but were turned away both times by
Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.).
Norwich controlled the edge in shots, 9-6, with Wagenseller collecting four saves to shut out Gordon. Of Norwich's nine shots, six came on goal, with Thongsythavong and
Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) tallying two apiece.
The Cadets will now prepare for their Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener, set to take place next Saturday, Sept. 10, in a rematch of last year's GNAC Championship game against the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Standish, Me.
