Men's Soccer: Cadets extend unbeaten streak against Emmanuel

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich men's soccer team picked up its 20th-ever win over Emmanuel College on Wednesday night, cruising to a 3-1 victory over the Saints on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) duel.

The Cadets got on the board early in the fifth minute, when Dante Mancini (Hopedale, Mass.) sent one flying from the 25-yard line to the left of goal that was centered off a header from Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) before being nudged into goal by Cullen Swett (Williston, Vt.). Norwich added another one in the seventh minute on a lead-up opportunity from Mamadi Jiana (Chicopee, Mass.) to Thongsythavong, who got one off to the left of Vincent Conelli despite being sandwiched by a pair of Emmanuel defenders.

Jiana added an insurance goal in the 56th minute, applying some fancy footwork to thread the needle past three Saints defenders to careen one past a diving Conelli and into the corner of the net. The Cadets' defense held Emmanuel in check, allowing just a bit of moment in the 73rd minute when Alec Erskine took advantage of a flurry of headers in front of Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) in goal, drilling a shot to get Emmanuel on the board.

Norwich dominated the tone from start to finish, maintaining a 14-8 edge in shots and a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal, in addition to a 10-2 lead in corner kicks. Jiana logged four of those nine shots that came on goal. Erskin was responsible for two of Emmanuel's three.

The win extends Norwich's undefeated record against Emmanuel, now standing at 20-0-5, dating back to Oct. 5, 2002.

The Cadets will wrap-up their four-game homestand on Saturday, hosting GNAC foe Lasell in a 1 p.m. tilt on Sabine Field.
