Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Despite a staunch defensive performance in the first half, the Norwich women's soccer team was unable to recover from a pair of second-half goals, falling to Elms College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown, 2-0, under the lights on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium on Tuesday night.
Â
The Cadets and Blazers played each other to a 0-0 deadlock after the opening 45 minutes, as both teams were an even 3-3 on overall shots while Norwich held a slight 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Norwich had a near opportunity on a far setup from the corner from
Isabel Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) that sailed past a diving Gianna Liquori in goal, but no Cadet was in position to take advantage of the wide open net before the Blazers were able to recover.
Â
Elms struck through the scoreless knot in the 50th minute, with Caroline Wilcox capitalizing on a kick from
Destiny Sanchez (Odessa, Fla.) that was intended to be scooped up by
Rebecca Karis (Fayetteville, N.C.), but ended up bouncing off the hands of Karis and into position for Wilcox to strike.
Â
The Blazers added an insurance goal in the 85th minute, off a penalty kick from Kayla Pasquel that went just right of Karis' reach.
Â
Elms would outshoot Norwich, 11-4, which included a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Abby Kirrane (Lunnenberg, Mass.) logged two of those shots against Liquori.
Â
Norwich will look to rebound on Saturday, hitting the road for the first of two back-to-back road games, with the first coming at Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Saturday. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. in Standish, Maine.
