Baseball: Norwich falls twice to Johnson & Wales

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Norwich University baseball team fell twice to Johnson & Wales, despite outhitting the Wildcats in both games on Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.

Johnson & Wales won the opener 7-2 and then followed up with a 2-1 win in the nightcap to sweep the season series and extend the Cadets' losing skid to seven straight.

Norwich (11-10, 2-6 GNAC) will return home to host Dean College on Sunday for another GNAC twinbill at Garrity Field, scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

In Game 1, Johnson & Wales broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run inning to turn a 1-1 tie into a 5-1 lead that the Wildcats would never look back from.

Despite outhitting JWU 10-9, the Cadets left nine runners on base and couldn't keep pace in the later innings. JWU first baseman Miles Kelly torched the Cadets with a 4-for-4 day, including four RBIs and a run scored to lead the Wildcats' offense.

Johnson & Wales opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with Xavier Botelho notching a RBI ground out to score Riley Hasson.

Norwich tied the game back up in the top of the fourth with Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) singling to shortstop to score Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.).

Kelly chased Norwich starter Tanner Raymond (Southbury, Conn.) midway through the inning with a two-run single to right field to put the Wildcats ahead 3-1. Timber Russell (Randolph, Vt.) came on to try and work out of the jam and retired two of the next three hitters, but Owen Davis doubled to right field to score two more runs and stretch the JWU lead to 5-1.

Richardson once again was at the heart of Norwich's offense in the top of the sixth with a two-out double. He then came around to score after Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) pinch hit with a single to left field to cut the deficit to 5-2.

JWU added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with Kelly singling to right field to score Hasson and Trevor Juan.

Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) came on and worked a full-inning of scoreless relief, striking out two. Raymond took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year after giving up four earned runs on six hits and striking out six in four innings.

In Game 2, Miller spun a six-inning gem, surrendering just two hits and striking out nine, but it wasn't enough as JWU scored two in the bottom of the fourth to take the victory. Miller dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) had a RBI double to score Richardson for Norwich in the top of the fifth, but that's all the offense the Cadets could muster in the second game.

Kyle Cutler threw a complete-game four-hitter for the Wildcats and struck out nine Cadets to improve to 2-0 on the season.
