Box Score 2 STANDISH, Maine - The Norwich University baseball team traveled to take on Saint Joseph's College (Maine) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday. Norwich served as the home team for both contests as the games had to be moved due to in climate weather in Northfield.
The Monks swept the Cadets with a 5-1 win in game one and a come-from-behind 6-3 win in game two.
In game one, the Monks struck for a run in both the top of the third and top of the fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead into the fifth. Norwich scored its lone run of the game on an RBI groundout by freshman first baseman Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) that plated junior right fielder PJ Morales (Bakersfield, Calif.) to cut the score to 2-1.
The Monks plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 5-1 final. Sophomore Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.) took the loss for NU after allowing three earned runs on nine hits over five and one-third innings. He walked three and struck out three to fall to 3-1 on the season.
In game two the Monks scored first again, this time with a run in the top of the first frame for a 1-0 lead. The Cadets rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the day at 2-1. Freshman left fielder Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) smashed his second home run of the season over the left field fence. Hayes then roped an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to stretch the NU lead to 3-1.
SJC rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth and three in the seventh to take the 6-3 win. Freshman Ben Emero (Medway, Mass.) tossed five strong innings, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) while walking two and striking out one. He didn't earn a decision in the loss.
The Cadets fall to 11-7 overall and 2-4 in GNAC play while the Monks improve to 10-9 overall and 3-1 in conference. Norwich is next in action on Tuesday, April 5th for a non-conference nine inning game at NVU-Lyndon. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
