Baseball: Norwich Earns Key Split at Lasell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Norwich University baseball team traveled to face Lasell University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Cadets earned a split with the Lasers, falling 2-0 in game one before taking game two 8-5 in 10 innings.

In game one, Laser struck for two runs in the bottom of the second inning and made that lead stand up for the 2-0 final. Senior Tanner Raymond (Southbury, Conn.) allowed just three hits over five and two-third innings of work in the loss, walking six and striking out two batters.

Freshman left fielder Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) collected two hits in the loss.

In game two, the Cadets got on the board first, in the top of the second inning. Hayes roped an RBI double to left-center field and junior second baseman Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the 2-0 lead.

The Lasers rallied for two runs in the home half of the second to tie the game 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning NU rallied for three runs as senior designated hitter Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) and freshman first baseman Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) drew bases-loaded walks. Senior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) then hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the 5-2 advantage.

Laser plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the game 5-5, where it would remain until the top of the 10th inning.

Freshman second baseman Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Penn.) came up with another clutch knock, this time a two-run triple to right-center for a 7-5 lead. Oropeza plated Carpenter with a single later in the inning for the 8-5 edge.

Sophomore Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) nabbed his second win of the season, throwing four innings in relief. He allowed just two hits and two walks while fanning four batters. Freshman Ben Emero (Medway, Mass.) picked up his first career save, tossing one third of an inning in the win.

The Cadets now stand at 16-14 overall and 7-9 in GNAC play while the Lasers are 17-16 overall and 11-4 in league play. Norwich concludes its regular season at Anna Maria on Friday, April 29th in a conference doubleheader. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
