Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N. Y. - The Norwich University baseball team traveled to face Plattsburgh State in a non-conference, nine inning game on Monday afternoon.
The Cardinals topped the Cadets 9-2 despite only outhitting the Cadets 11-10.
Plattsburgh broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Cards added two in the second, one in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 9-0 lead before the Cadets could plate their first run of the day.
In the top of the seventh, freshman left fielder Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored junior second baseman Abel Oropeza (Whittier, Calif.) to make it 9-1.
The Cadets scored their final run of the game in the ninth inning an RBI single to right by freshman catcher Tristan Carey (Crown Point, N.Y.) that scored freshman right fielder Nolan Knight (Altona, N.Y.) for the 9-2 final.
Knight and Hayes both finished the game with two hits while Oropeza, sophomore third baseman Wyatt Beatini (Oak Island, N.C.), senior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) senior designated hitter Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) and freshman first baseman Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) all collected one hit.
Freshman Alex Polli (PIttsford, Vt.) tossed a perfect inning of relief while sophomore Joe Grygent (Catumet, Mass.) allowed just one hit over an inning of relief in the loss.
The Cadets fall to 13-13 overall while the Cardinals improve to 11-12. Norwich is next in action for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Elms College on Saturday, April 23rd. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at Garrity Field in Northfield, Vt. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day.
