Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University baseball team hosted Albertus Magnus College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Garrity Field.
The Cadets and Falcons split the twinbill, with NU taking game one 4-0 and AMC rallying for the 5-4 win in game two.
In game one, Norwich got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore third baseman Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) delivered an RBI single to left that plated senior first baseman Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) for a 1-0 lead. Freshman second baseman Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Penn.) then scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to 2-0. Sophomore shortstop Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) then singled to center, plating Richardson, for the 3-0 lead.
The Cadets added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by Carpenter to make it 4-0.
The NU offense provided freshman Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) with more than enough run support as he tossed six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters. He improved to 2-3 on the season with the win. Beavin tossed a hitless seventh on the bump, walking two batters while fanning one.
Roberge finished the game with two hits and a run scored as did senior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.). Beavin also collected two hits in the win.
In game two, Norwich struck first once again, this time with a two-run single by Roberge in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. Roberge then came around to score on an error for a 3-0 advantage after one inning.
In the bottom of the second, Beavin scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0. The Falcons rallied for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take their first lead of the day at 5-4, a lead they would not relinquish.
The Cadets now stand at 13-12 overall and 4-8 in GNAC play while the Falcons move to 5-18 and 5-7 in conference. Norwich is next in action on Monday, April 18th for a non-conference matchup at Plattsburgh State. That nine inning contest is set for 3:00 p.m.
