Box Score 2 FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Norwich University baseball team continued its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader against Drew on Tuesday.
The Cadets swept the Rangers with a 5-0 win in game one and a 4-1 win in game two.
In game one, Norwich jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, freshman shortstop Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) hit an RBI single to right field that scored senior designated hitter Michael Koytikh (Melrose, Mass.) from third base. Carpenter then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error that allowed senior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.) to score. Both Koytikh and McGee were hit by pitches to reach base.
In the top of the third inning, junior right fielder PJ Morales hit an RBI single to right field to score McGee for a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, senior first baseman Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) scored on a throwing error to stretch the lead to 4-0. Norwich capped its scoring in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by McGee for the 5-0 score.
Freshman Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) picked up his first career in a relief effort, throwing two and two-third innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out three batters. Freshman Rile Rhodes (Boston, Mass.) pitched well in his first career start, allowing just one hit over two and one-third innings. He walked one batter. Freshman Noah Carpenter (Herkimer, N.Y.) sealed the win with two innings of relief, striking out two while surrendering one walk.
In game two, Norwich broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore catcher Zeb Perrault (Chelsea, Vt.) roped a leadoff double to right field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. With two outs in the inning, sophomore center fielder Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) singled. He then stole second and came around to score on a triple by Carpenter to make it 2-0.
The Cadets plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Morales and a wild pitch that scored Carpenter for a 4-0 lead. Drew plated one run in the sixth for the 4-1 final.
Sophomore Timber Russell (Randolph, Vt.) picked up the win on the mound after tossing four and one-third innings of two-hit ball. He didn't allow a walk and fanned four batters to improve to 2-0 on the season. Sophomore Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) snared his third save of the season after throwing two innings. He allowed just one hit.
The Cadets improve to 6-2 on the season and are next in action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Geneva. Game times are set for 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
